‘The Mummy’ returns: work has begun on a sequel to the franchise

The film was followed by two sequels – ‘The Mummy Returns’ (2001) and ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’ (2008). Also based on the film’s universe, a spin-off, The Scorpion King, followed in 2002.

In 2017, the studio tried to restart the franchise – the film ‘The Mummy’ with Tom Cruise was released. However, it was not a success with critics and at the box office. This forced Universal to abandon the original plans to release several projects on the ‘Dark Universe’.
